Welcome to Penn State GitHub Service!
We're excited to have you explore our GitHub Enterprise Cloud offering. This service is available to students and employees, providing tools for collaboration, development, and learning.
Getting Started
To begin, simply request a GitHub license through Penn State Software. Detailed instructions are available in our Knowledge Base Article on Signing up for GitHub.
Once we receive your request, we will add you to the service within 24 hours. You will receive an invitation shortly - please wait a bit before accepting it to ensure your account is fully provisioned. For easy onboarding, check out our Getting Started documentation to set up your account and explore GitHub's features.
Cost
The University provides basic GitHub Enterprise functionality, including GitHub Classroom, at no charge to individuals or units. Some optional add-on services, however, may incur a chargeback to the unit managing a GitHub organization within Penn State's subscription. See our ServiceNow KB article for more information on these add-ons.
Authentication
GitHub Enterprise employs two levels of authentication. First, log in with your GitHub account. When accessing Penn State GitHub resources, you will also log in with your Penn State credentials, linking your GitHub account to your Penn State user ID. For more information, refer to our ServiceNow KB article.
Finding Your Place
By default, Penn State invites all GitHub users to join the Penn State University Organization. This organization provides core GitHub features without extra-cost add-ons, serving as a hub for those without unit-specific needs. Here, you can create and manage repositories, and organize fellow Penn Staters into teams.
If you are working on a specialized project, your department or research group may have its own organization within Penn State's GitHub.
Below is a list of the GitHub Organizations in our Enterprise, including contact information.
To request addition to a specific organization, please email the organization's owner from your @psu.edu
email address.
