Welcome to Penn State's GitHub Enterprise

GitHub is an industry standard in the source code control and collaboration space. Penn State has a University Unlimited license.

Cost

The basic functionality of GitHub Enterprise is provided by the University at no charge to units or individuals, including GitHub Classroom. There are some features within GitHub which are not included in that level of service and may incur charges in the future.

More information on that is available in this ServiceNow KB article.

Our GitHub Enterprise Cloud offering is available to students and employees via softwarerequest.psu.edu. Click the "Order" button on the GitHub tile to be enrolled.

Authentication

GitHub Enterprise uses two tiers of authentication. First, you must log in with your GitHub account. When you attempt to access a Penn State GitHub Enterprise resource, you will be prompted to log in with your Penn State credentials. This will associate your GitHub login with your Penn State userid.

More information about this can be found in this ServiceNow KB article.

Organizations

GitHub organizes repositories using Organizations. Within Organizations, users can be further managed using Teams, and content is managed in repositories.

GitHub Teams can be nested, but not if they are mapped to Azure Groups. No hierarchy is available in Teams that are synced to Azure Groups.

"Default" organization

We have created the Penn State University Organization (psu-edu) as a place to start for individual or small groups of users who need only basic Git features. Soon, we will invite all Penn State GitHub users to this Organization as part of their individual onboarding. Metered services such as GitHub Actions are disabled in the psu-edu Organization. If you require metered services for your work, please check the list below for a GitHub Organization that your work might fit within or request a new GitHub Organization.

Below is a list of the GitHub Organizations currently in our Enterprise, where to find them, and how to reach the Owners. To request addition to one of these Organizations, please email its address from your psu.edu email address.
